BACTERIA

 

Bacteria are all around us, on us and even inside us. Although some bacteria cause disease, the number of strains of beneficial bacteria far exceeds the number of bad (pathogenic) bacteria. Without bacteria we would be up to our eyeballs in dead bodies and waste. We would not be able to digest food – life itself would cease to exist.

 

Bacteria can be aerobic (oxygen present) or anaerobic (oxygen absent). Aerobic bacteria function where air is accessible such as leach fields, aerobic digesters and dry wells. Anaerobic bacteria function in closed systems like septic tanks and cesspools. The bacteria in FLUSH-IT® are facultative – they function under aerobic or anaerobic conditions.

 

WHY YOU NEED SUPERIOR BACTERIA^SM

 

You might hear some so-called “experts” tell you septic tank additives are unnecessary and a waste of money. These “experts” are relying on outdated information from almost 100 years ago. With today’s detergents, antibacterial and deodorant soaps, laundry and dishwashing chemicals, disinfectants and cleaners, it is surprising that your septic system functions at all. A monthly addition of beneficial bacteria helps maintain your system’s health.

 

Before FLUSH-IT®, the only products available were extended powders or watered down liquids with low bacterial populations or plate counts. These products were limited to the digestion of proteins, starches and fats. Rid-X® added cellulose (paper) digesting bacteria in 1994. We introduced FLUSH-IT® in 1992 with 8 strains of specialized naturally occurring bacteria capable of digesting much more than food waste.

FLUSH-IT® Septic Energizer is a consumer product originally developed for industrial and municipal waste treatment facilities. Eight different strains of bacteria were selected from nature for their unique digestive properties. They were conditioned to adapt to adverse conditions through selective breeding. The result is a combination of Superior Bacteria^SM able to survive and digest grease, oils, protein, carbohydrates, detergents, hydrocarbons, sulfur compounds, phenols and cellulose (paper). Ordinary products digest only proteins, carbohydrates, fats and sometimes paper. We’ve packaged FLUSH-IT® Septic Energizer in convenient and easy-to-use water soluble packs.

 

   Since the bacteria are naturally occurring (not genetically modified) and non-pathogenic, FLUSH-IT® is not harmful to living organisms. FLUSH-IT® is chemical-free, so it is not harmful to your plumbing or the environment. In fact, it is beneficial to the environment because it biodegrades pollutants that would ordinarily enter the soil, air and water. Harmful compounds like detergents, hydrocarbons, medicines, dyes, disinfectants and others are digested and degraded to water, carbon dioxide and other natural products of biodegradation.

 

   Ordinary bacteria are killed by high concentrations of detergents, disinfectants and hydrocarbons. These pollutants, if not broken down, will enter your leach field, soil and eventually the environment. They can interfere with proper digestion in your septic system and may poison the soil in your leach field, causing flooding, slime, odors and finally failure.

FORGET ABOUT CHEMICALS

 

   Solvents will dissolve grease, but they just carry the problem down the line. Solvents are harmful to your septic system and the environment – especially groundwater and soil. They are also harmful to your health.

 

   Sulfuric and Hydrochloric acids are very dangerous to use and will damage plumbing. They will also corrode your septic tank and kill all the beneficial organisms they touch.

 

   Lye will eat through grease and hair, but is very dangerous to use. If you must use lye, be very careful and do not use it often. It will upset the pH of your septic system, but your system should recover from lye if it is used sparingly and infrequently.

 

FORGET ABOUT ORDINARY POWDERS

 

   Common powders contain ordinary bacteria at low to very low concentrations. Independent laboratory analyses revealed that ONE HALF-OUNCE of FLUSH-IT® had as much bacteria as 109 POUNDS of RID-X® and 7,700 POUNDS of SEPTONIC®. The infamous telemarketers from KRANE claimed 1 billion bacteria per ounce. This means one pack of FLUSH-IT® was equal to 3 ½ POUNDS of KRANE’S SEPTIC HELPER. But all bacteria are not equal. None of those products contained billions of multi-strained specialized bacteria. Their ordinary strains digest only the easy stuff – proteins, carbohydrates and fats. RID-X® did add paper digesting bacteria in 1994.

 

FORGET ABOUT ORDINARY LIQUIDS

 

   Liquids are usually watered down and sometimes contain detergents, glycols, dyes and perfumes. Their effectiveness is limited because the bacteria exist as bacillus spores and are limited to the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats under ideal conditions. Based on the analyses, ONE HALF-OUNCE of FLUSH-IT® had as much bacteria as 30 QUARTS of ROEBIC® K-37.

 

FORGET ABOUT YEAST & ENZYMES

 

   Using yeast in your septic system is as useless as the other old wives’ tale of throwing a dead cat into your septic tank. Yeast is specific for carbohydrates only and will immediately die in a septic tank environment.

 

   Enzymes become used up and are very sensitive to pH and other conditions, rendering them useless. Enzymes are also specific – protease for proteins, lipase for fats, and amylase for carbohydrates. Our bacteria produce their own enzymes, which is how they digest matter. They also reproduce quickly and create a living bio-film.

 

FORGET ABOUT ONCE A YEAR TREATMENTS

 

  You can’t expect a once a year product to maintain your septic system after a full year’s abuse. Even if it were possible, a sudden release of buildup could certainly cause problems down the line. A monthly maintenance approach prevents problems, rejuvenates your system and biodegrades pollutants before they enter the environment.

 

OUR WATER-SOLUBLE PACK

 

   FLUSH-IT® is premeasured and packaged in a water-soluble film made of Polyvinyl Alcohol. There is no need to measure the powder or cut open the pack for normal use. The PVA film dissolves in water within a few minutes and biodegrades into carbon dioxide and water within a short time.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

SEPTIC SYSTEMS – reduces sludge, odors and wet spots and improves drainage and absorption

 

   Septic Systems usually consist of a septic tank and a leach field, dry well, seepage pit, aerobic digester or other method for effluent to be treated further and/or absorbed. FLUSH-IT® is beneficial for all systems including Cesspools. Do not cut pack open. Drop the complete pack into the toilet.

 

Directions for Septic Systems

 

   Normal Maintenance—drop one pack of FLUSH-IT® into the toilet and flush. Repeat treatment monthly.

 

   Problem Systems—odors, sluggish flushing and wet leach fields may be treated with one pack a week for 2 or 3 weeks. Resume monthly maintenance treatments once problem disappears.

 

   Severe Problems—toilet backing up, foul—smelling gases from toilet, or black, foul-smelling puddles on leach field means it’s probably too late. FLUSH-IT® has been successful with severe problems, but a lot depends on the cause of the problem. If the problem is in the leach field try to add pre-mixed FLUSH-IT® (see Directions for Drains below) directly into the distribution box. If this is not possible, use one pack every other day for a week, then weekly until problem improves.

 

DRAINS – improves flow and drainage and reduces odors

 

  It takes weeks, months or years to develop some drain problems. Do not expect bacteria to solve your problems overnight. Bacteria need some time to digest organic matter. A repeat treatment might be needed. Allow the bacteria to work as long as possible before using the drain. Allowing a treated drain to remain unused overnight is a suggested minimum.

 

  Large chunks of organic matter will take some time to break down. Plaster, plastic and other inorganic matter will not be digested. Laundry drains can also be blocked by synthetic fibers and detergents. The bacteria will digest the soap or detergent, but not synthetic fibers.

 

  No readily available product containing only bacteria will digest hair – no matter what anyone tells you. Our bacteria will digest soap residue and other organic matter which might cause hair to clog the plumbing. In this case the clog may be released.

 

  Preventive maintenance is much easier than problem solving. Monthly or bi-weekly treatments can help prevent problems and keep your plumbing running smoothly.

 

  Every time you do laundry with bleach or ammonia, take a shower with deodorant soap, wash dishes or wash your hands with antiseptic soap, you kill the bacteria in your plumbing system. Avoid using FLUSH-IT® within a few hours before or after any of the above operations.

 

Directions for Drains

 

The pre-mix method is accomplished by dissolving one pack in 2 quarts of warm water (below 100 degrees). Mix and allow to stand for about 15 minutes. Then pour the mixture (while mixing) into each drain. You can treat up to 8 drains by dividing the mixture evenly. Allow to remain in drain at least overnight.

 

Another method is to allow a little hot water to enter the drain to heat the plumbing up a bit. Cut open a packet and pour about ¼ of the contents into the drain and follow with about 8 ounces of warm (not hot) water. Allow to stand at least overnight.

 

A clogged or problem drain might need two or three treatments.

 

GREASE TRAPS – improves flow and reduces odors and cleaning

 

   Normal Maintenance—drop one to four packs (depending on size and load) into drain closest to the trap. Follow with one gallon of very warm (below 120⁰F) water. Treat during least used times. Repeat weekly, twice weekly or daily, depending on size and load.

 

   Problem traps—pre-dissolve two to six packs, depending on the severity of the problem, in one to two gallons of very warm water. Allow to soak for 15 to 20 minutes while punching holes or channels in grease deposits. Shake mixture and add to holes or channels and allow it to remain as long as possible. Resume normal maintenance.

 

GREYWATER SYSTEMS, DRY WELLS, SEEPAGE PITS – improves drainage and absorption

 

   Treat like Septic Systems, but add FLUSH-IT® to drains or other inlets to systems. Follow with about one gallon of warm water. For problem dry wells, add one pack directly into the dry well on a weekly basis for 2 or 3 weeks or more until problem is resolved.

 

OUTHOUSES, RV TOILETS, PIT TOILETS, COMPOST TOILETS – reduces odors and solids

 

   Normal Maintenance—drop in one pack monthly, weekly or daily depending on load or frequency of use. Do not use any other treatments or chemicals.

 

MANURE PITS, LAGOONS – reduces odors and sludge

 

   Broadcast powder or pre-dissolved mixture over surface. Agitate. Repeat weekly or daily depending on amounts and load. Start treatment with one pack for each 500 gallons and adjust as needed.

 

COMPOST – speeds up the process and reduces odors

 

   Compost can be made in as little as two weeks depending on the materials present, particle size, available moisture and internal and external temperatures. Pre-dissolve one to four packs in one to four gallons of warm water, depending on compost pile size. Sprinkle mixture between layers of material.

 

RECREATIONAL and FISH PONDS – reduces muck and improves water clarity and quality

 

    Broadcast 24 to 48 packs of FLUSH-IT® for each acre of pond, along the shoreline. Water temperature must be above 50^oF for the bacteria to function properly. Repeat treatment mid-season if necessary, using about half the original quantity. Some of the bacteria should survive the winter and carry over to the next season, but a spring treatment might be beneficial.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  The Superior Bacteria^SM in FLUSH-IT® are in a suspended state and need water and food to become active. They function best at temperatures between 50^o and 110^oF (active septic tanks are always warm). Activity increases with temperature. The water-soluble pouch is designed for maximum efficiency and ease of use for monthly septic maintenance. Other uses, such as drain treatment, may require a different approach for the most economical application. The longer the bacteria are in contact with the material to be digested, the better they work. The more finely divided the material (such as when making compost), the faster they work. For pre-dissolved maximum activity, one to four packs may be dissolved in one gallon of warm (not hot) water. Allow to stand 15 to 20 minutes and stir before use. Keep bacteria and pre-dissolved mixtures below 110^oF and out of direct sunlight. Do not allow pre-dissolved mixtures to stand for more than one hour before use.

  “Shock Treatment” – ordinary products will tell you to double or triple their dose to “jump start” your system. This is usually because their bacterial counts are low or they want you to use more of their product. Superior Bacteria^SM will double in numbers every 20 minutes. If you have a major problem, we suggest you use FLUSH-IT® weekly or bi-monthly for the first few treatments. It is better to use it more often than to use more.

  Water Softeners – The people who install water softeners will tell you the salt produced won’t harm your septic system. This is true and false. The very low concentrations of salt generated by the “softening” procedure probably won’t hurt your septic system. Having the regenerating salt solution go directly into your septic system is very bad. High concentrations of salt will kill bacteria and probably all the soil organisms in your leach field. It also reacts with high clay content soil to form a cement-like substance. Either will create a “bio dead” condition, causing your leach field to fail. Salt also corrodes concrete and there have been cases of the baffles in septic tanks collapsing from corrosion due to salt from the water softener.

 

Do not use with any other chemicals or treatments.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN

 

  Although FLUSH-IT® is non-toxic, it does contain bacteria and should not be ingested. The bacteria in FLUSH-IT® are certified non-pathogenic, non-opportunistic and vulnerable to ordinary antibiotics. The pouch may pose a choking danger to infants and small children. Prevent any contact with children.

 

  Wash hands thoroughly after use. While the bacteria in FLUSH-IT® are non-pathogenic, they can cause a minor infection on open cuts or wounds. Any infection that might develop can be treated with any common antiseptic or antibiotic ointment.

 

  Any powder that might be released from a broken packet can cause irritation to the eyes, lungs or mucous membranes. If eye contact is made, wash thoroughly with water for 5 to 10 minutes. Consult a physician if redness or irritation persists.
