ST. FRANCIS GREEN LIPPED MUSSEL

Background

Perna canaliculus, the Green Lipped Mussel, is produced commercially in pristine waters off the New Zealand coast. It is a nutritional whole food that possesses an exceptional degree of biological activity. This edible bivalve has been a valuable food source for the native people of New Zealand for centuries. It contains the ocean's natural mineral balance, similar to that found in the human body.

Composition

The average analysis of dried whole Green Lipped Mussel yields:
Protein (as amino acids)            60 – 62 %
Complex Carbohydrates           12 – 13 %
Chondroitin Sulfates                 11 – 12 %
Lipids                                        4 –   5 %
Minerals                                    5 –   6 %

Perna canaliculus contains complex proteins, polypeptides, naturally chelated minerals, long chain unsaturated fatty acids, enzymes, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), vitamins, nucleic acids, chondroitin sulfates, glycoproteins and polysaccharides.

Quality

The Green Lipped Mussel is grown on ropes suspended from platforms on the surface of the ocean. The ocean is continuously monitored to ensure that the growing environment is free from pollution and other contaminants. The mussels obtain their nutrients directly from the phytoplankton and minerals contained in the sea water. When the mussels are at their "peak", they are harvested. The edible portion (excluding the shell) is freeze dried using low temperatures and vacuum to remove the water. This preserves the integrity of the bioactive molecules and ensures the stability of the activity of the many nutrients. Each lot of freeze dried Perna must pass the strict quality guidelines of the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries. Each batch is analyzed to insure the absence of pathogenic bacteria and heavy metals.

Benefits

The Green Lipped Mussel has been found to have beneficial effects in relieving the pain, inflammation and symptoms associated with:

    Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease)
    Rheumatoid Arthritis
    Bursitis
    Ankylosing Spondylitis
    Sports Related Injuries
    Lyme Disease
    Inflammatory Skin Conditions
    Connective Tissue Repair

Besides the obvious benefits for dogs and horses, preliminary studies have shown Perna to help increase sperm count and motility in breeding stock.

Anti-inflammatory Effects

One study on rats, with collagen induced arthritis, showed anti-inflammatory activity and gastroprotective properties by reducing gastric ulerogenicity caused by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Another study showed an aqueous fraction of the Green Lipped Mussel also exhibited anti-inflammatory results. A study using the lipoid extract, containing certain polyunsaturated fatty acids, also reduced inflammation in rats with polyarthritis. A study performed at Clemson University, revealed that Perna was effective in preventing arthritis in addition to reversing it (in both animals and cell cultures).

Immunostimulatory Effects

The Clemson University study also showed that the mussel acted as a immunomodulating agent, affecting both humoral and cellular immunity. Dr Lawson demonstrated that an extract decreased the level of antibody production in a B-cell Hybridoma assay in a cell culture model. It also lowered the TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor) level in a cellular-mediated response. Perna also decreased cytokines (IL-1, IL-2 and IL-6) antibody secretion levels.

Green Lipped Mussel Xtra

The Sea Mussel Plus formula contains whole Green Lipped Mussel in addition to:

Glucosamine Sulfate - well documented as reversing Osteoarthritis. It has an anabolic effect on chondrocytes to synthesize GAGs and proteoglycans plus it provides one of the key building blocks to articular cartilage. Our source is from shrimp and crabs.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) -  a stable metabolite of DMSO, reduces pain in the affected joint and aids in collagen synthesis. MSM is found in all cells of the body. Our source is from trees in Oregon and Washington State .
Manganese - required as a cofactor for the enzyme glycosyltransferase, which is essential for the synthesis of collagen, GAGs and proteoglycans - components of articular cartilage and bone. Our source is an amino acid chelate.

Usage

Green Lipped Mussel - Serving Size - give 2 capsules up to 30 pounds of body weight. Give 2 additional for each 30 pounds. Give one serving 2 to 3 times a day for 4 weeks or until results are noticeable. Then give one serving a day divided evenly in the morning and evening.
Green Lipped Mussel Xtra - Serving Size - give 2 tablets up to 30 pounds of body weight. Give 2 additional for each 30 pounds. Give one serving 2 to 3 times a day for 4 weeks or until results are noticeable. Then give one serving a day divided evenly in the morning and evening.

There have been no reports of toxicity or adverse reactions to either product. If tenderness in the joints occurs, it is usually a sign that beneficial results will follow as the products continues to "feed" the tissues. This condition is temporary and may last from 3 to 10 days. Continued use is recommended.

Bill:
Sure you can use my name, I am 70 Yrs Old and now feel 20 years less old, It took me six months of hobbling around before I found you so I am tell everyone about these little green lipped devils. My wife has really noticed my walking and said "Better order some more before the government outlaws them, or the drug companies find a way to make them theirs and charge $10.00 a capsule". Glenn D. Barbour, Lake Almanor, CA

“Remarkable results! The doctors told me I needed surgery on my knee. I decided to try your mussel product instead. After a 3 or 4 week period I’m running again - 10K! Thanks.” D. L., NYC

"I first became aware of Green Lipped Mussel when our veterinarian prescribed it for our 10-year old beagle, who had developed an arthritic hip and was limping.  In about a week, he was scampering around like a puppy.   I consider that to be a recommendation as free from placebo-effect as you can get.

However, I still resisted the idea of using it for my own back pain.  (I have to admit that I am VERY skeptical of "alternative" remedies, notwithstanding the fact that I have used glucosamine for a few years now.)  However, my pain got to the point where I had to try something, so I ordered a supply of Green Lipped Mussel in December.  It's now February, and I have a hard time remembering the last time I started or ended my day with pain in my lower back.

What can I say?  It works for me.  Thanks." H. M. Bethesda, MD

Great for your Dog, Cat or Horse too!
